[Wertheim Castle . . . right off the bat!  (And the blog has finally made it to May!)]

5-1-16-1-copy

[Followed by Wertheim port.]

5-1-16-2-copy

[Well, guten tag!]

5-1-16-3-copy

[Gives you the idea that we were in the basement.  Our window was right on the water line and when I opened our curtain that morning . . . A Peeping Swan!]

5-1-16-4-copy

[Our guide, an American.  She married a German fellow and has lived in Germany ever since – long enough to have two teenage daughters, who sound very American in their desire to escape the boredom of their “small” town (it is just a little bigger than the greater Alexandria metropolitan area).]

5-1-16-5-copy

[Beautiful setting]

5-1-16-6-copy

[So, it appears schwans are a big deal around here.]

5-1-16-7-copy

[I forgot . . . something about the windows and their placement.]

5-1-16-8-copy

[Here’s the tourists . . . ]

5-1-16-9-copy

[Walking down the middle of streets again.]

5-1-16-10-copy

[And this is a wall . . . ]

5-1-16-11-copy

[A really neat place to rent . . . and airbnb?]

5-1-16-12-copy

5-1-16-13-copy

[Cherry blossoms?]

5-1-16-14-copy

[Old Town center . . . ]

5-1-16-15-copy

[With its own “leaning tower”  – Spitzer Tower.]

5-1-16-16-copy

[See?  Leaning slightly to the right.]

5-1-16-17-copy

[As with many places along these rivers, floods are just a way of life.  Here our guide shows us photos of the last one from just a few years ago (I even remembered it).]

5-1-16-18-copy

5-1-16-18-1-copy

5-1-16-19-copy

[Helen and the tree.]

5-1-16-20-copy

[The Super, Helen, and the tree.]

5-1-16-21-copy

[The Super and Helen supersede the tree.]

5-1-16-22-copy

[The Supervisor’s take on the neighborhood, i.e, her photos.]

20160501_115045-copy

20160502_094735-copy

[Violeta . . . ]

20160502_094754-copy

[And the tree.]

20160502_094801-copy

[A really fake professional in action . . . ]

20160502_094944-copy

20160502_094945-copy

20160502_094947-copy

20160502_094956-copy

20160502_095310-copy

[The final 3 from the Super, downtown . . . ]

20160502_100443-copy

20160502_100502-copy

20160502_101839-copy

[Back to me, i.e., my photos.  More high water marks from floods over the centuries.]

5-1-16-23-copy

5-1-16-24-copy

[And back to window shopping.]

5-1-16-25-copy

[Loved their restaurant row – hard to choose!]

5-1-16-26-copy

5-1-16-27-copy

5-1-16-28-copy

[Now THIS is window shopping!]

5-1-16-29-copy

5-1-16-30-copy

5-1-16-31-copy

5-1-16-31-1-copy

[What?  We didn’t stop to eat?]

5-1-16-32-copy

[The PH crest is something from the 16th century.  The Japanese appearing mark below it was something really cool, but I forgot.  Like maybe a Minnesota Twins fan lived here or maybe the builder loved wasabi.  After much searching, I can’t find anything?]

5-1-16-33-copy

[More flood marks.]

5-1-16-34-copy

5-1-16-35-copy

[Love these alley ways.]

5-1-16-36-copy

[Yes, they probably were made out of real gingerbread.]

5-1-16-37-copy

[And there’s the castle from the first photo – the major landmark of the city.  But it was a steep climb (something about steep and uneven stairs), so we begged out.  As I recall, Pam and Tom did go up there.]

5-1-16-38-copy

[Everybody has a clock tower.]

5-1-16-39-copy

[In most places these were trash cans – probably so here?  But the Super loves ice cream!]

5-1-16-40-copy

[Finally, outdoor coffee and pastry!]

5-1-16-41-copy

[It was a little chilly, but the sun was out.]

5-1-16-42-copy

[And then we saw this . . . ]

5-1-16-43-copy

[But first things first – John has his outdoor coffee!]

5-1-16-44-copy

5-1-16-44-1-copy

[Then back to the Echo.  Alexandria’s-own Echo Press sponsors a “take your Echo with you” and send a photo of yourself reading it wherever you are.  We sent this one in – Editor Al wasn’t buying it!  😉  ]

5-1-16-45-copy

5-1-16-46-1-copy

5-1-16-47-1-copy

[I think we ran out of time before we could take a ride on the little train.]

5-1-16-48-copy

[Back to the river front.  All aboard!]

5-1-16-49-copy

[And we’re on our way again . . . ]

5-1-16-50-copy

5-1-16-51-copy

[We’re on the Main River on our way to the Rhine River with the next stop at Koblenz.]

5-1-16-52-copy

5-1-16-53-copy

5-1-16-54-copy

5-1-16-55-copy

5-1-16-56-copy

[Another vertical vineyard.]

5-1-16-57-copy

[Didn’t we just eat something?]

5-1-16-58-copy

[Well, you can still look out the window while you’re eating.]

5-1-16-59-copy

5-1-16-60-copy

5-1-16-61-copy

5-1-16-62-copy

People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.  ~ Dagobert D. Runes  (Great first named if he dropped the “Dag.”)

Up Next:  Koblenz . . . or Homecoming.
