On To Section Finals!

1891054_733621109995653_2102387777_nWhen we walked into the RCC on Tuesday night, the first person we saw was Assistant Coach Ashley Holmes.  We asked how everyone was feeling about this section semi-final game against Detroit Lakes.  She replied, “A little nervous.”  To which I mumbled something to the effect that was good because it’s a tournament game.  The Cards were the No. 1 seed, DL was seeded 4th, and we beat them twice during the regular season – all the reasons to be a little nervous.  [Your guest columnist photo here are our nieces, Sophie and Jessica, of Stafford, Virginia.  They are basketball fans.  I have no idea why I put them in a hockey post?]

[A different angle on the team.]

[Little Rev fires one into the Lakers zone.]

I started the game, as I often do, with a video.  DL got a solo break-out early and scored on the first shot of the game.  That pretty much bagged the idea of a video.  As so often happens, DL did not score again until their last shot (I think) of the game (I have no idea if it’s true, so it’s just poetic license).

[Mari at the head of a Cardinal scrum at the DL goal.  No goal.]

[The shot . . .]

2-11-14-24 - Copy

[No goal.]

2-11-14-25 - Copy

[We had many such opportunities  in the game – odd man rushes, solos in alone – sometimes you just have to tip you hat to the opposition goalie.  She kept keeping us off the board.  ]

2-11-14-26 - Copy

[The play continued into a rush hour traffic situation with minor fender benders.]

2-11-14-27 - Copy

[Mel’s at point-blank range.]

2-11-14-28 - Copy

[Still, no goal.]

2-11-14-29 - Copy

2-11-14-42 - Copy

[Mel, Micaela, and Nicole on attack again.]

[I see the puck!]

2-11-14-50 - Copy

[No goal.]

Viewing reminder:  You can double click on any photo to make it full screen size.  For the photos on this end of the ice (our offensive zone in the 2nd period), it’s fun to watch the expressions on the faces of the Cardinals-of-the-future behind the glass.  They’re watching their role models.  Gotta love it.

2-11-14-53 - Copy

[Taylor had to be an assistant coach for this game . . .]

2-11-14-54-1 - Copy

[And again for the section championship.  I think she’ll be available if we make state.]

2-11-14-55 - Copy

[We’re still down 1 – 0 as the 3rd period begins.]

2-11-14-56 - Copy

[Our front line has gotten behind theirs.]

2-11-14-57 - Copy

[Face-off in their zone, time to make a move!]

2-11-14-58 - Copy

[Micaela begins from center ice . . .]

2-11-14-63 - Copy

[I see the puck right in front!]

2-11-14-65 - Copy

[Finally!!  Mel said enough is enough and tied it up.]

2-11-14-66 - Copy

[We’re halfway through the final period and that’s Melissa time.]

2-11-14-67 - Copy

[OK, we finally cracked the safe.  Now let’s get another one.]

2-11-14-68 - Copy

[We’re in again!]

2-11-14-69 - Copy

[Mel w/ Micaela on the draw.]

2-11-14-70 - Copy

[We kept it in . . .]

2-11-14-71 - Copy

[Then Melissa continued her special senior year as she virtually carried two defenders to the net and still got off a scoring shot.  If Mel gets one goal, she always gets two . . .    ]

2-11-14-71-1 - Copy

[We finally have the lead for the first time.  Oh, did you notice?  They finally give the ladies goal judges when the tournament starts.  Love to see the red light come on!]

2-11-14-72 - Copy

[The ref points, “Yup, it’s a goal.”]

2-11-14-73 - Copy

[Way to go, Mel!!]

[The other senior on the ice this night was Rachel.]

2-11-14-75 - Copy

[She carried the puck in fending off two defenders . . .]

2-11-14-76 - Copy

[She got to the goal and shot a backhander – it was blocked but she stuck with it and backhanded in the rebound!  Great goal!]

2-11-14-77 - Copy

[And then she fell on her babushka (in this case, not meaning her Russian grandmother).]

2-11-14-78 - Copy

[The bench was delighted!]

2-11-14-79 - Copy

[After scoring no goals for 2 1/2 periods, we now had 3 in a matter of minutes.]

2-11-14-80 - Copy

[But even then we weren’t done (yeah, it’s blurry?)]

2-11-14-81 - Copy

[Mel put a pass across the front of the goal to Kaila on the far side, who promptly tapped it in!]

2-11-14-82 - Copy

[GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!  It was now 4 – 1 – game over!]

2-11-14-83 - Copy

[Yeah, they scored on a blueline slapshot in the final minute to make the score 4 – 2.]

2-11-14-85 - Copy

So now it’s off to the section final, Friday night at the MAC in St. Cloud, where once again the opponent will be Fergus Falls.
