Alexandria – 3, Fergus Falls – 1

5-16-13-46

[Thursday, May 16, the last regular season home games (oh, we won the 2nd game, too – 10-4) of the year.  It was thus also . . .]

dusty5-15-13

[Oh, but before we proceed – Dusty Johnson’s predicament on the 6th hole at the Alexandria Golf Club the preceding day.  Yes, that is his ball in the tree . . .]

dusty5-15-13-1

[Dusty, of course, is known to many of the ladies as the undefeated singer of the National Anthem at many girls’ hockey games.]

[AD Hartmann noted at the game that if the Cards won both, and the doubleheader on the road to end the regular season, we would be the No. 1 seed throughout the sections and have all home games!  🙂 ]

softball '13-1-1

[Thank you, ladies!]

5-16-13-1

[Taylor Ellingson was on the mound (or in softball, “the flat”).]

5-16-13-2

[Taylor breezed through the 1st inning; Sarah Bruzek got a lead-off single for us in the bottom of the first, but we could tell the Otter pitcher was going to be tough.]

Video of the 1st inning:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq7WAb7copg

5-16-13-3

[Jess Syvrud @ 2nd.  Jess batted 2nd last year; this year she bats clean-up.  She’s a not really very big guard on the basketball team, but she has hit some balls over the fence this year!]

5-16-13-4

[Dani Strater @ 1st (well, when she’s not making my chocolate malts at the Northside DQ).]

5-16-13-5

[Sarah Bruzek @ 3rd.]

5-16-13-6

[“Baby Bruiser” again; I suspect shortstop Danielle Carlson was blocked from my view.]

5-16-13-7

[Team meeting after the top of the 1st.  Again, this is to discuss eating arrangements after the game.]

5-16-13-8

[Now batting, No. 4, catcher, Emily Kuennen.]

5-16-13-9

[Still waiting to see Em really launch one this year.]

5-16-13-10

[Nope, not that one.]

5-16-13-11

[C’mon pitch, lay one in here.]

5-16-13-14

[She’s on first.]

5-16-13-15

[The Otter pitcher had good stuff.  Our two runs in the bottom the 2nd were produced without a hit – a couple walks, some fielders’ choices, and probably an error.]

5-16-13-16

[Ms. Strater, I presume?]

5-16-13-17

[Here comes a hard one . . .]

5-16-13-18

[Whaddya think?]

5-16-13-19

[Kaila Dewanz, No. 8, playing rightfield on this day, I believe.  She was the accidental major subject of the day, though also being a hockey player probably didn’t hurt.  😉 ]

5-16-13-21

[On your mark . . .]

5-16-13-22

[Then on 1st base.]

5-16-13-23

[Then on 2nd base.]

5-16-13-24

[Hmmm, can’t remember what happened to Kaila?  But here we are back in the field again.]

5-16-13-25

[This was probably the celebration of the day . . .]

5-16-13-26

[We had just ended the inning with a nifty . . .]

5-16-13-27

[6 (Danielle) – 4 (Jess) – 3 (Dani) double play!  🙂 ]

5-16-13-28

[I took a glance over at the JV game on the adjacent field.  Seemed there was always a lot of cheering with 3rd base coach Mitch Loch waving home runners by the dozen.  The JV won the game 31 – 1.  Not really fun for either team.  It was decided not to play a 2nd game.]

5-16-13-29

[Back to the varsity and Rachel Peterson, No. 3.  Rachel was either in leftfield or DHing?]

5-16-13-30

[Nice swing!]

5-16-13-31

[Taking one the other way?]

5-16-13-32

[The dugout, with the ex-coach and state political candidate supporting the fence on the far right.]

5-16-13-33

[Why, here’s Ms. Dewanz again!]

5-16-13-34

[In my day, the Dark Ages, it was a term of derision to say, “You swing like a girl!”  Now I would consider it the ultimate compliment.]

5-16-13-35

[Right on it!]

5-16-13-36

[“It’s outa here!”  OK, I don’t really remember.]

5-16-13-37

[“Baby Bruiser” has a great power swing.]

5-16-13-38

[Roger Riley, Alexandria Golf Club president, appears distracted by events at the JV game.  Roger and the aforementioned Dusty are our designated National Anthem singers.  I wonder how much he paid for that great box seat right behind home plate?]

5-16-13-39

[Emily coiled and ready for action.]

5-16-13-41

[Em uncoiling.]

5-16-13-42

[As I recall, centerfielder Jana Roste hit a good shot here.]

5-16-13-44

[Good rip by Dani.]

5-16-13-45

[Dani again.  Cards got a tad sloppy in the top of the 7th, allowing the Otters to score their run.  But it looks like we’re ready to make a run in the sections.  The Super Fans left after the 1st game – it was date night, after all!]

[And the spring sports season winds down . . .]

About tomobert63

The Journey Begins Thanks for joining me! This is the follow-up to the original, “alexandriacardinals.wordpress.com,” which overwhelmed the system’s ability to handle it any more. Thus, this is “Part 2.” As the original was initially described: 10-26-07-4 “It all began in a 5,000 watt radio station in Fresno, California” . . . wait a minute, that was Ted Baxter on the Mary Tyler Moore Show! Let’s see . . . oh yeah, it all began in 2003 when retirees, i.e., old people, in Alexandria, Minnesota, who had no desire to become snow birds, went looking for mid-winter entertainment here in the frozen tundra of West Central Minnesota. We discovered girls’ high school hockey, fell in love immediately, and it remains our favorite spectator sport to this day. Initially, and for several years, reports on these games were e-mailed to those who were actually snowbirds but wanted to keep abreast of things “back home.” It was ultimately decided a blog would be more efficient, and it evolved into a personal diary of many things that attracts tens of readers on occasion. It remains a source of personal mental therapy and has yet to elicit any lawsuits. ~ The Editor, May 9, 2014 p.s. The photo border around the blog is the Cardinal girls’ hockey team after just beating Breck for the state championship in 2008. It’s of the all-tournament team. The visible Breck player on the left is Milica McMillen, then an 8th-grader – she is now an All-American for the Gophers. The Roseau player in the stocking cap I believe is Mary Loken, who went on to play for UND; and the Cardinal player on the right, No. 3, is Abby Williams, the player we blame most for making us girls’ hockey fans who went on to play for Bemidji State. *********************************************************************************** Photos contained herein are available for personal use. All you have to do is double click on any of the photos and they will become full screen size. You can then save them into your personal “My Pictures” file. They make lovely parting or hostess gifts, or holiday gifts for such as Uncle Ernie who wants to see how his grand niece is doing on the hockey team. If any are sold for personal profit, however, to, for example, the Audubon Society, National Geographic, Sven’s Home Workshop Monthly, Curling By The Numbers, or the World Wrestling Federation, I only request that you make a donation to the charitable organization of your choice. You have two hours and fifteen minutes. Pencils ready? Begin! **********************************************************************************
